Pain Relief Using Hypnosis

by James P. Ryan

In some cases, pain is very appropriate and in fact promotes healing. Pain is your body’s way of communicating with the brain and informing the mind that there is something that needs your attention. After surgery or another acute injury, pain lets your body know that healing is required.

Nutrients must be sped to the injured area and the area needs to be protected from infection. Perhaps rest or mild movement may be indicated. Once that vital communication has occurred and everything the body can do has been done, there is no longer any need for continuing discomfort, which does not facilitate healing, and in fact interferes with and retards it.

All pain is unique to the individual, whether the source is shingles, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, neuropathy, migraines, cluster headaches, toothaches, irritable bowel or a long list of other causes. Relief may come to the individual in unique ways, and hypnosis can always assist in relieving or eliminating pain.

Before hypnosis can be used to remedy discomfort in the body or the mind, a doctor must refer the client with a statement that they have examined the client and that there are no contraindications to hypnosis conditioning. Otherwise, a client with a headache might have a tumor that needed to be removed, and by relieving the discomfort, it would be easier for the client to delay a diagnosis contributing to that client’s well-being.

In cases where discomfort could not be relieved with medication, hypnosis often helps and in some cases, it provides total relief.
